Community Building Mitrovica (CBM) – Background
Community Building Mitrovica (CBM) is a Local Non Governmental Organization (LNGO), active from March 2001 in the Mitrovica region, covering the six municipalities of Mitrovica (Northern and Southern part), Vushtrri/Vucitrn, Skenderaj/Srbica, Zubin Potok, Leposaviq/Leposavic and Zvecan.
The overall aim of CBM is to facilitate contact and dialogue between citizens in the whole of the Mitrovica municipality. The staff consists of devoted citizens – both Serbs and Albanians – who grew up in this region and want to restore the previous confidence and even friendship that war and politics have destroyed. By supporting many concrete projects that address the direct needs of local communities, CBM contributes in a modest but effective way to this aim.
The work of the past eight years has gained the organization a strong reputation on both sides of the Iber/Ibar. From this basis of trust, CBM works on projects to facilitate contacts and dialogue among the different ethnic groups in Mitrovica. As a local grassroots organization with a mission of identifying and advancing the common concerns of Mitrovica citizen’s, it tries to empower communities to work together and establish the means for a peaceful co-existence. CBM provides facilitation and mediation on interethnic dialogue, and advocates with and for all those promoting peace and social integration.
Having gained the respect and credibility of the communities of Mitrovica, CBM works throughout the region, initiating numerous links between people, strengthening the position of women, working with the Roma community and supporting the freedom of speech by issuing a publication called M- Magazine. It additionally facilitates many small ‘IDP return projects’, advocates for transparency and accountability of institutions by instigating the establishment of an advocacy group MMT (Mitrovica Monitoring Team) and works with youth in addressing their concerns and problems such as violence at schools, reforms and human rights.
